The lease has been secured from Glasgow City Council for the former garden centre at Alderman Road, Knightswood. This operation represents an outdoor retail outlet for bulkier products such as compost, moulded ornamental features, plants, planters and salad boxes, as well as training and community based employment opportunities. Alderman Rd offers considerable potential to bring together various groups within the local community by providing a meaningful working environment for those furthest from the job market, e.g. people suffering from mental health problems, drug or alcohol addiction, the long term unemployed and asylum seekers.

In addition to providing a safe working environment, the garden centre will provide a valuable resource for the local community, supplying plants grown and raised on site, and also products supplied by the C.H.T in the form of compost and garden furniture.

The garden centre will act as an ideal base for running a landscaping and garden maintenance department, which creates employment and provides a centre where customers can visit to discuss their requirements. In addition to the sale of plants, the site is large enough to incorporate a market garden to grow vegetables and fruit. This activity proves invaluable as an educational and physical resource for service users, and acts as a catalyst for social interaction. It is hoped that as the centre develops and awareness grows the Alderman Rd site will bring the local community together by providing employment, social interaction, healthy living and the provision of services.
